Why is it “making history” every time some woman or minority ascends to a position no one from their group has held before? Gee whiz it’s exciting how Nancy Pelosi is making history.

  1. Today’s San Francisco Chronicle had the following headline: Pelosi First Woman to be Nominated for Speaker.

This is going to ruin the day for anyone who Tivo’d the speaker race to watch it later, but Pelosi lost, 228-201. What were the odds?

  2. [Yawning, rubbing eyes] She lost for speaker? Does that mean that history, for once, hasn’t passed me by?

  3. Whenever I hear the name Pelosi, I remember a recent NY Times Op-Ed essay listing the worst, most disliked Congressmen, those who most damaged the institution. Pelosi was on the list; the Times commented that she is known in Congress for nothing except her prodigous fund-raising ability.

Of course, the actual Speaker, Tom DeLay, also made the list, from the GOP side. Coincidence? I think not.

  4. When was DeLay speaker? I thought it was Gingrich, then Livingston (the guy who resigned during the impeachment hearings), then Hastert.

  5. It was. Delay was and is Majority Whip.
