The artist can generally be trusted to publish his best stuff. It was awfully sentimental of old <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philiplarkin.com\/\">Larkin<\/a> not to have published this:<\/p>\n<p>We met at the end of the party<br \/>\nWhen all the drinks were dead<br \/>\nAnd all the glasses dirty:<br \/>\n&#8216;Have this that&#8217;s left&#8217;, you said.<br \/>\nWe walked through the last of summer,<br \/>\nWhen shadows reached long and blue<br \/>\nAcross days that were growing shorter:<br \/>\nYou said: &#8216;There&#8217;s autumn too&#8217;.<br \/>\nAlways for you what&#8217;s finished<br \/>\nIs nothing, and what survives<br \/>\nCancels the failed, the famished,<br \/>\nAs if we had fresh lives<br \/>\nFrom that night on, and just living<br \/>\nCould make me unaware<br \/>\nOf June, and the guests arriving,<br \/>\nAnd I not there.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was beaten to this by Allan and Elizabeth, in that order, but I don&#8217;t mind &#151; really! &#151; because the poem is very good, as undiscovered poems almost never are.
